Poland and France: Another opportunity to "shut up?"

Poland and France: Another opportunity to "shut up?"

Poland and France will meet together today. A key issue will be constructive relations with Russia...

Do you think Poland has a right to be more critical of Russia's record on democracy? France seems to want a more unified European front...

But will it play in Poland?

But will it play in Poland?

The U.S. is planning Arab-Language TV broadcasts to Europe. In an effort to change the attitude that Europe's estimated 11-12 mil Muslims have about the US. But is this the best strategy? Do you take the message (whatever it will be?) to the masses, or is it better to work the diplomacy angle on Arab leaders? Will this backfire?

So, will we see a Muslim 'come out' on the Simpson's?

Remarks By Secretary Of State Condeleezza Rice and Polish Prime Minister Marek Belka - Warsaw Poland

The visit by Sec of State Rice to Poland this month was important, but many Poles had their ears focused on her remarks about the visa issue, this is what she said: "[W]e did talk about a number of bilateral issues and I especially want to say that we are pleased that we believe that we are making some progress on what is a very difficult issue, the visa issue, but one that we have engaged in a spirit of friendship and cooperation and one that we will continue to engage in that way to overcome difficulties in that area. Thank you very much."

Does this sound like an evasion or serious engagement of the issue?

A look at old Warsaw

A look at old Warsaw

Here's an interesting polish page about Warsaw, devoted mostly to architecture: new and, mainly, old. Interesting for history lovers, like me :).
If' You can't read the language, I recommend taking a look at the pictures. They have a lot of old photos of pre-war city and the reconstruction process. Also, You can see some drawings of future project proposed for realization, and commented by page authors.

Polish Rail -- IC to Krakow good

Polish Rail -- IC to Krakow good

Here's a good link for planning your train travel within, and without, Poland...I use the IC to Krakow every month and it's pretty decent. I usually don't buy a ticket and hang out in the dining car since it's only 2.5 hours. I think that the extra charge for buying the ticket on the train is about 6-9 zl, no big deal. In the winter though the bar-car gets really cold, I don't know, the heaters seem to turn off when the train is running...why? Another irritation is the staff...pretty cold themselves...and banging those steel food/coffee carts around is maddening!

Business as usual...Political promotion

Business as usual...Political promotion

What do you think, should LOT Airlines buy Boeing or Airbus planes? According to Warsaw Business Journal Online: "It has emerged that the President of France Jacques Chirac, UK's PM Tony Blair and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder sent a letter to Polish PM Marek Belka in December 2004, in which they recommended that the Polish government purchase new passenger planes from Airbus for national carrier LOT. "

Again, we see Poland smack dab in the middle -- it's loyalties tested...what should LOT do?

Is the EU simply pandering to xenophobic Polish fears connected with losing farmland?: "Because of Polish fears that foreigners -particularly Germans - will buy up large tracts of the Polish countryside, the EU has agreed that sales of farmland to outsiders can be suspended for 12 years."

Europe becoming more European, really?

Europe becoming more European, really?

I was at a presentation at the USA Embassy in Warsaw last week. The guest was Prof. Stephen Szabo. During his talk he claimed that "Europe is becoming more European." The title of his talk was "Trans-atlantic Relations after the US Election." This was a puzzling claim for me. With changing immigration patterns and an aging European population, what feature of Europe is becoming more European? The Franco-German bloc is increasingly anti-American, but could this have more to do with the increasing voices of dissent from non-europeans in those countries?

Much was made of the anti-Bush demonstrators in Mainz, Germany who were blocked from showing the USA President their distaste...but did you know about the Counter demonstration?

Is Europe becoming more European? What exactly is becoming more European within Europe?

Poland should support Turkey?

Poland should support Turkey?

Recently the Polish Prez, said that Turkey should be supported...: "The Polish head of state emphasized the need to secure a place for Turkey in a new united Europe. In his opinion, the democratic processes initiated there should be supported, especially in view of the threat posed by Islamic fundamentalists"

Is this really a good idea? Shouldn't Poland, and the whole EU, be more focused right now with EU integrationinstead of a knee-jerk bandwagonism?
